SPD-9000
The original SPD-9000
was one of the most successful racing ship designs in
the Galaxy, popular in Race Courses in every populated
system where the sport could be found. The ship eventually
ended up as a favorite among "pilots for hire"
due to its simple, yet effective design. Because this
ship uses standard, readily available racing parts,
it is easy to maintain and upgrade. It was soon discovered
that minor power output adjustments allowed it to be
outfitted with a shield generator and some guns, making
it a decent, effective starfighter, faster than anything
else available. It's not uncommon to find an SPD-9000
that has been modified almost to the point of being
unrecognizable. Some techs have even found ways to install
heavy artillery and other illegal military hardware.
The drawback is that the ship is heavily optimized for
speed, making the additional hardware unreliable, often
poorly calibrated, and even dangerously unstable if
the technician doing the modifications isn't very good.
Even upgraded, the SPD-9000 is still essentially a rocket
with a seat attached, optimized to fly as fast as structurally
possible to the detriment of all other attributes.
