Sector 13 is
designed to be the first ever fully 3D space shooter that
plays like a multiplayer first-person shooter. Our idea was
to take the immersion, competition and intense action of the
best multiplayer shooters, and apply it to the space sim genre.
The result is a fast-paced, arcade-like experience that's
perfect for LAN parties and internet multiplayer.
Overview/Story
Sector 13 is a multiplayer space combat game. It takes place
in an area of space known as Sector 13, which is completely
controlled by gargantuan mega-corporations with fleets of
starships that could rival that of the Galactic Confederal
Navy. These four corporations, Ptolaman-Triton Defense Systems,
Daetrexx Enterprises, Inc., Scuvelli StarTech Corporation,
and Reinaare Consolidated Industries, have battled for ultimate
control of the sector for generations. The player is a starfighter
pilot for one of the corporations, and finds himself sent
on numerous melees and dogfights to gain control of small
pockets of space, defend convoys, capture and recapture solar
systems, and generally try to reduce the value of the competing
companies' stock.
The competition
is fierce between the corporations. The fate of entire solar
systems lay in the violent battles that rage throughout the
region. Because of the distance from the centrality of the
Galactic Federal Government, the corporations rule over their
respective systems like small governments in and of themselves.
It is a very incoherent system of rule, and full of political
inconsistencies that only add to the turmoil that engulfs
the lives of every being in Sector 13. Everyone who lives
in Sector 13 in one way or another has employment by one of
the four major conglomerations. The outcomes of the battles
significantly affect the livelihood of all of the beings in
the area.
Long ago, when
the Galactic Confederal Government consolidated its power
over the entire known galaxy, the scientific community found
itself baffled by the mystery of the area of space dubbed
Sector 13. For no known reason, this arm of the galaxy was
found to contain hundreds of thousands of habitable star systems
rich in resources, yet not one single sentient species has
ever been found in the region. For this reason, the Galactic
Confederal Government has decided to not waste resources in
establishing a governing presence there. Instead, the Government
agreed to give the region over to corporate development with
the guarantee of complete autonomy granted to the companies
chartered therein. After hundreds of years of hostile takeovers,
military conquests, and large scale consolidation in the area,
the Galactic Confederal Government continues to honor the
original charters given to the various corporations in Sector
13 space and has not interfered in any way with the internal
politics and conflicts of the Sector. Therefore, the wars
will continue as long as there is profit to be had and solar
systems to conquer.
Corporations
Ptolaman-Triton
Defense Systems
Efficiency, simplicity, reliability. These have been at the
core of the Ptolaman-Triton corporation policy since the founder's
inception of the defense systems and military hardware manufacturer,
a policy that can be seen in their elegant yet simple approach
to designing starfighters. The Ptolaman-Triton core starfighter
design has remained unchanged for generations. This basic
design has allowed them to create a line of starfighters that
are modular with interchangeable parts and components, and
easy to learn, maintain, and upgrade. As new technology is
developed it is implemented into each new generation of fighter
with the same conservative approach that the company has always
held to keeping even the latest greatest model to feel familiar
and comfortable to pilots and mechanics alike.
Originally,
Ptolaman-Triton Defense Systems began life as a weapons contractor
to the Galactic Confederal Government specializing in reliable
and shielded missile systems for everything from capital ships
to handheld infantry weapons. At the moment, they are the
only manufacturer in the Galaxy to make a missile system that
can't be jammed in close quarters combat. As the company grew,
it found itself gaining a reputation for military excellence
with its hardware. After a growth explosion and several favors
from high-ranking government officials, Ptolaman-Triton was
given a charter in the uninhabited area of space known as
Sector 13. Generations and many hostile take-overs later,
Ptolaman-Triton is one of only four corporations left battling
for ultimate control of the region.
Daetrexx
Enterprises, Inc.
Generations ago, Daetrexx Enterprises was known as Daetrexxian
Augmentation and Cybernetics Corporation based out of the
Daetrexx system in Confederate space. DACC specialized in
human augmentation through cybernetic implants and artificial
replacement organs. Once a successful bid was won for military
grade bionics with the Confederal Government, the Daetrexxian
biotech division switched over almost entirely to military
applications. It was in this department that the idea to create
a fully integrated human interface to a starfighter was conceived.
The logical conclusion from this point was to also manufacture
the starfighters that would use the technology. The Galactic
Confederal Government also realized the potential and incorporated
the new starfighter designs into the elite fighter pilot divisions
where volunteers could be found to under go the necessary
augmentation. These squadrons almost always out performed
other elite squadrons in performance and cohesion. Thus the
Daetrexx military legacy was born.
Once augmentation
technology had been perfected and reached a large acceptance
level through out the galaxy, Daetrexx found itself awash
in cash. This influence, along with an already outstanding
reputation among the military, helped Daetrexx to win a charter
in Sector 13 space. Using both its military might as well
as artful business manipulation Daetrexx found itself acquiring
company after company trying to make it in Sector 13. Generations
later, Daetrexx Enterprises finds itself locked into a war
of survival as one of only four corporations still thriving
in the region.
Scuvelli
StarTech Corporation
Scuvelli StarTech remains the largest supplier of energy containment
and transport materials in the galaxy, despite diverting a
large portion of its resources into starship manufacturing.
The corporate culture of Scuvelli grew from this founding
engineering philosophy where the smooth, shining surfaces
of energy containment became the fundamental visualization
for almost every manufactured product to come out of Scuvelli
controlled space. SSC products have a famous reputation for
beauty and simplicity in design. SSC engineers have devised
some of the most amazing applications for energy management
that the galaxy has yet seen. Among the most famous remains
the standard equipped "CurveBeam" laser cannons
on all of SSC's military starcraft. These galaxy-famous weapons
add an element of versatility lacking in other manufacture's
energy weapons. CurveBeams allow the laser cannon to be fired
as either a "dumb" energy blast or a charged particle
beam that can be configured on the fly to track a target,
functioning similar to guided missile and torpedo weaponry.
Reinaare
Consolidated Industries
Reinaare was the first corporation to be given an occupational
charter by the Galactic Confederal Government to control Sector
13. Because of this, it was given the prime pick of the planets
with the most natural resources, and could quickly and easily
build its small fleet and become the multi-system-spanning
mega-corporation that it is today. Originally, Reinaare began
its corporate life as a genetic research and manipulation
firm to create life forms capable of living and terraforming
the different planets in Reinaare controlled space. Reinaare's
design philosophy has always centered on psychological manipulation
and fear, which can be seen in its very unconventional and
severe-looking starships and fighters. RCI has used also maintained
this philosophy in obtaining control of the smaller companies
in the region, and has used intimidation and aggression to
force these companies out of business.
Galactic
ConFederal Defense Force Standard Aerospace Hardware
The loose Confederacy of star systems that comprise the government
in the core of the galaxy have long cooperated in several
key areas. The largest of these, is of course, the military.
The Galactic Confederacy Defense Force has banded together
to create certain key standardizations in military hardware
across the confederacy , but as if to stress the individual
sovereignty of star systems, these standards are constantly
modified and customized while in use in local militias.
Manufactured by a consortium of companies across Galactic
Confederacy Defense jurisdiction, all GCDF military hardware
can be identified by its system of origin due to each manufacturer
adding its own special touch or design feature to the particular
hardware being built within the system. The standard GCDF
starfighter, the F-77 Havoc, can be found in an almost unlimited
number of modified variations and configurations. Some systems
have gone as far as to give the starfighter manufactured within
their territory a new designation, despite the fact that all
GCDF starfighters begin with the core Havoc design process.
